Scratching one activity off my bucket list
Last night, I attended my first Capoeira class in Greenhills, along with my friend, May. She and I have been wanting to try it since we saw Escola Brasiliera de Capoeira (EBC) perform at Planet Zips’ SpinDependence event last August. Their performance was just breath-taking :)
So what is Capoeira, you may ask?
It is a mixture of body and soul, of dance and fight, of instruments and voices. According to history, Capoeira was created by imported Africans on Brazilian soil. It evolved as a means of expression of the yearning for freedom and simultaneously as a form of entertainment.
Condemned and persecuted, capoeira managed to overcome the preconceptions of the beginning of the century and reach new horizons. It is considered one of the most comprehensive forms of physical conditioning and is an integrated balance of mind, strength, rhythm, poetry, agility, and harmony. It is the maximum expression of liberty and keeps the art of the ancestors alive, being part of Brazilian and now, world history.(Source: EBC website).

It’s amazing how free-spirited individuals can come together in a small dance studio and do what they do best—- that is, to sing and perform with nothing short of joy and extreme passion for the art, while supporting one another (even newbies like me) and giving their opponent a pat on the back for a job well (or in my case, poorly) done :)
So while forcing myself to do those impossible twists, kicks, and turns, it dawned on me that if I want to pursue Capoeira, I’m going to have to cut back on my vices———now that’s going to be a problem. haha! Errr, I guess I can give Detox101 another try. Maybe Friday will be my only exception. Then again, what if Fri extends til Sat? Or what if I’m having a sh*tty day at work? Or if someone annoying bugs the hey out of me? Eeeps. We’ll see. For now, I’m just happy to scratch another activity off my bucket list. :)
